Yuletart 2012 art by theopteryx
Here’s my second piece for Yuletart this year! The prompt was the Avengers + Mardi Gras, an idea that combines two of my favorite things and continues to delight me. I want to party with Thor real bad.
Happy New Year, everybody!
It was a while before I was even aware that there was so much negative feeling about Scarlett Johansson, both in general and in the context of Black Widow. People were saying that she was just there to look hot. People were saying that she was a token female. People were saying that she only had two facial expressions. Were these people even watching the same movie as me? The one where she saves the world? — The costumes and characters of The Avengers: Black Widow and Hawkeye.

If your main criticism of Black Widow centers around her outfit, I will fight you

I just facepalmed about this “mewling quim blah blah Joss is a sexist moron” stuff myself so hard that I bruised myself. Seriously?
Warning: lots of opinions and Widow/Pepper/Hill love and Avengers movie spoilers.
Okay guys…
Learn the word “joke.” Think about whether it could possibly apply to a writer saying that his greatest achievement in a film is inserting a piece of raunchy archaic vocabulary.
Think about how interesting and actually empowering that line was when seen in context. Loki mocks her in a sexist way for what he perceives as her innate lack of strength, which she was consciously faking (while possibly still showing some real emotional complexity and weakness which is not inherently sexist it is interesting writing) in order to manipulate him into telling her exactly what she wants to know. Loki is punished for those sexist thoughts, and Joss simply was able to find a creative and completely in-character way of expressing them. ”Shakespeare in the Park,” remember?
“Mewling quim” is a fucking fantastic insult from a screenwriting standpoint - horrible and uncomfortable and infuriating and Joss should be proud of coming up with something so viscerally affecting. I already knew what “quim” meant when I saw the movie, and when it came out of his mouth, my jaw dropped because it was really shocking. And horrifying. And cruel. You know why? Because Loki as a character is often shocking and horrifying and cruel. Joss wrote successfully for a character. Learn to separate character from writer.

I permanantly associate this song with this Utena AMV:
And it’s late and I’m tired, so sure, be the Rose Bride, Hawkeye.
…on further consideration, yeah, I would enjoy fanart of Natasha done up like Utena, but I don’t know how much further I want to take that thought train before we end up at the stop where Hulk is a shadowplay girl. SMASHIRA SMASHIRA GOZONJI SMASHIRA
…
I BETTER GO TO BED
… trained for 1000 lbs of angry green raging killing machine trying to smash you? are you serious about this? she was not wearing any protection, she had just a tiny gun, a ankle hurting and a monster able to snap a human in two by TOUCHING him chasing after her. I’d say her reaction was more than understandable and she showed much control in being able to actually get up and go kick Clint’s ass.
Shit like this really pisses me off.
A strong female character is not a character who shows no fear, sadness, or other ‘negative or weak’ emotions. A strong female character is someone who is well rounded, believable, strong in herself and who she is, and doesn’t need to derive her strength from other characters around her. Before you write her off because she showed one moment of being human, consider the surroundings.
- Her partner (and the person she is closest to, currently) had been abducted, possibly injured, hijacked by an ‘alien’ and forced to turn against her and the organisation they’ve made their home in.
- SAID ORGANISATION is under attack, and in danger of collapsing completely. With everything Natasha has survived in her life (just the Red Room, for starters), she can be forgiven a moment of fear at facing it again.
- She’s just been made aware of, and confronted, what I’m assuming is the first confirmed alien threat she has ever encountered. And sassed the shit out of him.
- I hate pulling this out, I really do, I hate saying this more than anything else, but…Read. A. Fucking. Comic. She has broken down. She has had her moments. She has cussed out her teammates and left them in her dust. She has been strong, emotionally and physically, stronger than almost any other character. To suggest that she betrays this by showing genuine fear in the face of utter destruction and the unknown…that’s about the most disrespectful thing I can think of. By suggesting that a character can only be strong by showing no fear, terror or sadness is ignorant, disgusting, and in this case, misogynistic.
Can I please just add in here that SHE WAS BEING CHASED BY THE FUCKING HULK. THE FUCKING HULK. SHE PULLED A GUN ON BRUCE BANNER WHEN HE PRETEND YELLED AT HER. SHE HAD A DOZEN SHIELD AGENTS TO BACK HER UP WHEN SHE WENT TO FETCH HIM AND SHE STILL NEARLY SHIT HER PANTS WHEN HE JUST PRETENDED TO HULK OUT. THE HELICARRIER HAS A TANK SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO CONTAIN AND JETTISON THE HULK. THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE MAKING WEAPONS OUT OF AN INFINITE ALIEN POWER SOURCE AND THE BEST THING THEY CAN THINK TO DO WITH THE HULK IS “OH SHIT TRICK HIM INTO THE TANK AND DROP HIM OUT THE PLANE AND THEN FUCK OFF REALLY FAST CAUSE HE CAN PROBABLY JUMP UP HERE AND PUNCH US OUT OF THE SKY OKAY”.
OF MOTHERFUCKING COURSE SHE WAS SCARED WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU YOU CANNOT TRAIN FOR WORSE THAN THE HULK BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING THAT IS WORSE THAN THE HULK HE PUNCHED A CHITAURI WARSHIP OUT OF THE SKY JUST BECAUSE HE COULD J;ALSKDJFLANSDLKAJSDLJFALSIDJKJ OH MY GOD
Clearly I have feels about this. Everyone, please stop being dickholes about Natasha. She was an awesome character. Showing some emotion doesn’t make her not awesome. Tough ladies do not have to be emotionless killing machines. They are allowed to be human beings as well.
“By suggesting that a character can only be strong by showing no fear, terror or sadness is ignorant, disgusting, and in this case, misogynistic. “
What? You want that female character to show EMOTIONS and be a CHARACTER rather than just be a badass for 120 minutes? Can’t do that!
I thought it was pretty awesome that even though she was terrified and just wanted to sit down and have a cry, she still got up, pulled herself together, and kicked some ass. Not being scared only makes you an idiot. Being scared and getting up anyway shows courage.
Jesus christ, more people need to read World War Hulk.
Man, that moment was one of my favorite bits in the whole movie. A badass female character who still has vulnerability? Is scared but gets up and goes back to ass-kicking? That is the JUICE. That was where I was going “yessss Josssss mama liiiiike”
I entirely wasn’t expecting Black Widow and Hulk to be my favorite things about this damn ol’ movie, but sure as hell they were!
